Oi! You…yes, I’m talking to you!I wanted to talk about fear; it’s a very common emotion that applies to a lot of different things. Why do we fear the things we fear? What about those irrational fears that seem to have no reason for them? Why is it that people are so scared of what they don’t know?Fear helps to keep us safe – being afraid of something makes us more cautious…people who feel no fear can be a danger to not only themselves, but to others around them. So fear is a good, healthy emotion that unites most people despite age, race, and religion and even throughout history. Fear makes us aware of what is going on around us and within us, the trick is to not let what is going on within overpower what needs to go on without. Christ himself cried out in fear in his final hours, but did that at any stage stop him from going through with what he knew he had to do? Even knowing what the eventual outcome was going to be (His resurrection allowing lives to be saved!) didn’t stop Him from feeling fear.A lot of us let ourselves be ruled by fear…not of spiders, or the dark…but the fear of what others will think of us. “I can’t go to church on Sunday morning! My friends are going to the movies, what would they think”“I’d better laugh at that payout, it was pretty harsh, but I don’t want to be seen standing up for that chick!”My question here is….what do you think of yourself? Did it feel good to laugh with the others when someone else was clearly hurt or even humiliated by what you did? Does it feel good to hide your faith even though you’re scared you might look like an outsider if you don’t?Why not use this time of the year, the time when Christ rose above His fear for us and step outside of your box, do something that scares you but will make you stronger as a result.
